I vacillate between the highly logical representational approach to form and the commitment to the emotional abstract. The human form is so tempting, so lush, I often succumb to the undulation of the hips. I am equally swayed, however, by the abstract idea of desire.
After the physicality of “Porgy and Bess” I moved towards a deeper abstract position with “The Four Seasons.”
Demeter gives birth in Winter to a young man whose fancy turns as Persephone dives into Spring, swimming, then swinging her hips in Summer and finally swimming back to Hades in the Fall.
Each of the seasons has its own shade of green – deep viridian in Winter, medium light green in Spring, lime green in Summer and sap green in Autumn. So too, does each season have a fruit – pomegranates in Winter, raining strawberries in Spring, sweet cherries in Summer and ripened apples in Autumn.
